"Maltitol such as sorbitol (E420), mannitol (E421) and xylitol (E967) is a polyol. It is used as a sweetener and humectant. It is a sugar substitute, both have the same sweetening power. It has no cariogenic effect, its caloric value is lower than that of sucrose and it causes a lower rise in blood sugar levels. It is used in foods with reduced energy value or without added sugar. On the other hand, it is not allowed in drinks, because the amount that would have to be used to obtain the desired effect would inevitably cause intestinal disorders. In any case, from a consumption of 30-50 g/day of maltitol, the products of its bacterial fermentation can cause intestinal discomfort such as diarrhoea, bloating, etc. Thus, foodstuffs containing more than 10% maltitol must be labelled ""excessive consumption may have laxative effects"". However, at current levels of use and consumption, there is no risk associated with this additive. No acceptable daily intake (ADI) has therefore been set."
Depending on use: if sweetener, only in energy-reduced foodstuffs or foodstuffs with no added sugars, prohibited in infant food..
